5 Tips for a better relationship

Tips for a Better Relationship - Talk - inSync for Life - Counselling and Psychology

Talk

Yes, this may seem simple.
But I'm not referring to the simple, everyday and dare I say it...superficial aspect of life.  Yes, these things are important.
But here I'm talking about really talking...telling your partner how you're feeling, what you're thinking and what you want.  Don't make your partner guess.
Just remember though, to do this is a respectful way that shows that you value and love your partner

Listen

Again...this seems so simple doesn't it?
But how many of us really listen?
Really HEAR what our partner is saying...
Are you one of these people who start to speak before your partner has finished speaking?  You're not alone!
Put aside your own thoughts and feelings...really tune into what your partner is saying...and feeling!
It takes practice...but you can do it!

Tips for a Better Relationship - Play - inSync for Life - Counselling and Psychology

Play

So many couples forget to play together.
Think of the time your were first together... most couples had fun! They enjoyed each other...they were frivolous...fun...silly...  Long-term relationships often lose this - but it can be re-captured!  And if you never had it...well, you can now!
What is it that might create some frivolous fun with your partner?  Ask this question of your partner also!
Respect
You WILL disagree... you WILL have conflict...You WILL be triggered by your own insecurities, traumas, and stresses.  Be aware of these... work to prevent your own personal issues from hurting your partner.  Remember that your partner is your LOVE... why on earth would you want to hurt or be disrespectful to someone you love?

You
Remember that YOU are the most important person in your life!
I'm not suggesting that you be selfish, or narcissistic or neglect your partner or family... but it is vital that you learn to look after yourself.  Take time for you...and here's a challenge for many....WITHOUT your partner or children!  Play a sport, time with friends, just relaxing listening to music, or walking on the beach... this is YOUR time to replenish.
and finally... (ok, there are really 6 Tips!)
Ask for support

Traditionally in Australia...we seem to have problems asking for help... well, perhaps this refers mainly to men!
But remember that none of us can do everything alone, all of the time... we all need support.  we all need a helping hand.
Asking for support is a courageous thing to do.  It demonstrates strength,,,whether you're a man or a woman... If you're struggling with life, if you're feeling depressed, anxious, having difficulties in your relationship that seem insurmountable...ask for help...
We offer a confidential, professional and friendly counselling service.  In person or by videolink.
