Helena Green - The Gottman Method

John Gottman is an American psychologist, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Washington, who has worked over four decades on divorce prediction and relationship stability.  Together with his wife, Julie, he has developed a scientific and highly successful approach to couples therapy: Dr. Gottman has completed seven studies that explored what predicts relationship breakdown and the Gottmans have shown that they can predict with 93.6% accuracy which couples would separate. In fact, they could predict separation at around 85% after observing couples for only 15 minutes!

Helena has an amazing way of respectfully connecting with her clients while communicating the ideas and concepts underlying the Gottman method.  Her 'down-to-earth' approach and extensive experience as a Clinical Sexologist and Psychosexual Therapist assists clients to gain a greater understanding of issues that might be affecting this area of their relationship.

What you can expect from Gottman Therapy with Helena:
First it is important to understand that this form of therapy is not a short-term therapy method:
Gottman Therapy is a highly detailed and structured approach to supporting couples who are having difficulties.
it will provide:
  • the opportunity for each of your to examine in depth the issues that are affecting your relationship, and
  • for you learn to develop a greater understanding of yourself and your partner,
  • while being provided with skills and strategies to address issues affecting your relationshi
In the area of Relationship Counselling, it is generally accepted that most couples enter therapy because they are unable to overcome problems they are experiencing.  While this may be true of you, the fact that you are considering therapy with Helena shows that you do have awareness of the difficulties you are experiencing and it does show that you are willing to examine and work towards overcoming these problem areas.  This is a good sign!
As you commence Gottman Therapy with Helena, you will need to maintain your commitment to yourself, your partner and your relationship.
Please be aware that Gottman Therapy with Helena will require a strong commitment from each of you.

The Couples Counselling approach:
First:
Helena will meet with you both together to provide information concerning the Gottman Therapy approach and
to determine if she is the best clinician to meet your needs.
This session is a 'double' session of 100 minutes to ensure a greater understanding of your relationship concerns

Next:
You will each be requested to complete a highly detailed questionnaire covering all aspects of your relationship.
Each area will result in a score as to the level of satisfaction of each of you identifying relationship strengths and areas that are in need of strengthening.

This is an extensive questionnaire available only through the Gottman Method.
Some of the many areas examined include:

  • Friendship and intimacy
  • conflict
  • shared meaning
  • satisfaction with Passion and Romance
  • Satisfaction with quality of sex life
  • Individual areas of concern
  • Trust
After completing the questionnaire, it will be scored and examined by Helena. A highly detailed 30+ page report for each person will be prepared.
The Next Step:
Helena will meet with each of you individually to discuss the results of your questionnaire
These sessions will be for 50 minutes
Next:
Helena will meet with you both, as a couple, to allow discussion of your questionnaire results and those of your partner,
examining areas of similarity and difference.
This is an extended couples session of 75 minutes
and Next:
Couples Therapy...
The Gottman Method will allow you to see at a glance your relationship strengths and areas in need of development.

Remember: Gottman Therapy is not a 'quick fix': it takes commitment, dedication, motivation, time and energy.
A financial commitment to your relationship is also essential.
The number of expected sessions will differ from couple to couple. You should expect to commit to  10 - 15 therapy sessions
