Managing the Emotional Storm a Dialectical Behaviour Program a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills-based program to assist clients to tolerate intense emotions and manage self-destructive behaviour How can the Managing the Emotional Storm program assist you? DBT is an evidenced based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder sufferers. However, DBT skills are also extremely useful for clients in assisting in the management of impulsive behaviours, mood changes, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression and urges to use substances, food, gambling etc. to avoid or get rid of uncomfortable or intense emotions. DBT gives clients concrete skills and strategies to manage disruptive emotional experiences. DBT has been found to be most effective when working in a group setting, in conjunction with individual counselling sessions and telephone contact. The course provides the skills and strategies to teach ‘crisis survival’ techniques and address suicide ideation, self-harm and impulsive destructive behaviours of patients, assist those working with patients who present with high levels of emotional dysfunction, gain knowledge of all four skills of DBT, Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectives, including the additions of new skills added in 2nd Edition DBT Training 2015 (Prof Marsha Linehan), and gain knowledge in how to work with a non-verbal approach using creativity alongside the skills of DBT. This is a four-day state-of-the art intensive professional development workshop developed by Drs John and Julie Gottman. It is based upon extensive clinical evidence. The Gottmans developed this form of couples therapy to assist achieving a deeper sense of understanding, awareness, empathy, and connection in the relationship. They found that this ultimately results in increased intimacy and growth of each individual. The counsellor provides therapeutic intervention using couples exercises, to help identify and address the personal defences that get in the way of effective communication and bonding.
